Where the river turned back. The New Madrid earthquakes of 1811–12 were so powerful they briefly reversed the flow of the Mississippi River, creating Reelfoot Lake in their wake. This photograph finds beauty in that violent origin — a landscape of cypress silhouettes, still water, and the vast Tennessee sky.
