Born from the earth's upheaval. Reelfoot Lake in Tennessee is one of North America's most extraordinary natural phenomena — created by the catastrophic New Madrid earthquakes of 1811–12, which caused the Mississippi River to flow backwards and flooded the surrounding forest. Today, ancient cypress trees rise from its shallow waters, bald eagles patrol its skies, and migratory birds rest along its shores.
